Burguret Route

Trek the Untamed Side of Mount Kenya.

A wild, rugged, and untamed ascent of Mount Kenya. Leave the crowds behind and navigate dense forests and striking volcanic formations on this pristine wilderness trail, descending via the scenic Chogoria route. The Burguret route is rarely used and feels like a true expedition. The paths through the lower forests can be muddy, overgrown, and require minor bushwhacking. It is perfect for adventurous trekkers who want a raw, off-the-beaten-path experience. Proper gear is essential.

5 Days 4 Nights Burguret Route

Trekking: Approximately 4–5 hours
Starting elevation: Approximately 1,950 m
Camp: Giant Bamboo Camp – approximately 2,600–2,800 m

Your Mount Kenya adventure begins with an early departure from Nanyuki toward the Burguret Forest side of Mount Kenya. Following the necessary park and route arrangements, you meet your professional mountain crew and begin your trek into the remote western slopes of the mountain.

The trail takes you through dense indigenous forest and impressive giant bamboo stands. Burguret is particularly special because it receives far fewer trekkers than Mount Kenya’s better-known routes, giving you a genuine wilderness experience. Wildlife such as buffalo and elephant can occur in the forest, making it important to remain close to your guide and follow all safety instructions.

Arrive at Giant Bamboo Camp in the afternoon, settle into camp, enjoy dinner, and rest.

Overnight: Giant Bamboo Camp
Meals: Lunch & Dinner

DAY 2 — Giant Bamboo Camp → Highland Castle

Trekking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Elevation: Approximately 2,800 m → 3,700 m
Camp: Highland Castle

After breakfast, continue your ascent through the changing mountain ecosystem. The dense bamboo gradually gives way to higher forest, giant heather, moorland and spectacular open landscapes.

As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes increasingly characteristic of Mount Kenya’s high-altitude environment. The imposing Highland Castle formations provide one of the route’s most distinctive landmarks.

This is an important acclimatization day. Your guide maintains a steady pace, allowing your body to adjust gradually to increasing altitude. Take time to appreciate the dramatic scenery and capture photographs before settling into camp.

After dinner, your guide will review the following day’s high-altitude section, weather conditions, equipment, hydration and pacing.

Overnight: Highland Castle Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, traverse the eastern moorlands of Mt Kenya edge of the Nithi Gorge. You will have picnic lunch overlooking this majestic gorge above Vivien Falls. In the afternoon, you will hike up the ridge of the Nithi to our private camp at Hall Tarns at 14,500 feet, dinner/overnight.

Summit elevation: 4,985 m
Trekking: Approximately 8–10 hours
Summit departure: Around 2:30–3:00 AM

This is the highlight of your Mount Kenya adventure.

You wake before dawn, have a light breakfast or hot drink, gear up and begin your ascent toward Point Lenana, Mount Kenya’s highest trekking summit. The climb is slow and deliberate, with your guide setting a manageable pace suitable for the altitude.

As dawn approaches, reach Point Lenana at 4,985 metres and witness the spectacular sunrise over the surrounding Kenyan landscape. On clear mornings, the views can stretch across the mountain ranges and distant plains.

After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin your descent toward the Chogoria side. This transition introduces another spectacular face of Mount Kenya, with dramatic valleys, alpine scenery and impressive geological formations.

Depending on the final itinerary and conditions, overnight accommodation may be arranged at a suitable high-altitude camp along the Chogoria descent.

Overnight: Chogoria-side mountain camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your descent through Mount Kenya’s spectacular eastern landscapes.

The changing vegetation provides a dramatic contrast to the rugged alpine terrain experienced during the summit ascent. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape gradually transitions toward the mountain forest.

Continue toward the Chogoria exit point where your vehicle will meet you for the transfer to Chogoria town and onward travel.

This marks the end of your five-day Mount Kenya Burguret adventure — a journey that has taken you from remote bamboo forests through wild moorlands and alpine terrain to the summit of Point Lenana.
